Three ways to fail at Italian SEO
Recurring patterns on the Italian sites I audit:
Translation passed off as Italian content
Italian source pages translated from English by a non-Italian agency produce copy that reads adequately but lacks the natural register Italian users expect. The register matters more than in English: “voi” vs “tu” decisions, the courtesy level on commercial pages, the placement of polite forms. Italians notice immediately when copy was not written by someone who lives in the language. Conversion suffers even when traffic looks fine.
Ignoring the regional fragmentation
Italy is the most regionally fragmented major European market. Milan, Rome, Naples, Palermo behave very differently in commercial expectations, price sensitivity, payment methods and trust signals. A unified Italian site that ignores regional variation works only for niche national B2B. For B2C or local services, regional adaptation makes a material difference. Targeting matters as much as language.
Missing trust signals Italian buyers expect
Partita IVA visible, codice fiscale where relevant, REA / Camera di Commercio registration, GDPR consent compliant with Garante della Privacy (stricter than the EU baseline on certain points). For ecommerce, Trusted Shops Italy or equivalent badges, plus visible reso (return) policy. Absence of these signals translates to fewer conversions even when traffic is good.

Why this model is more honest (and more effective)
Michael Bastin: 25 years in SEO. Italian: I do not speak it, but I read it fluently. The reading proficiency comes from native French, fluent Spanish (Valencia resident since 2016), Castilian context and a Latin background from school years. The result is that I can audit Italian SERPs and competitor pages competently, understand briefs, take notes during native team meetings.

Sud + Isole (Napoli, Bari, Palermo, Catania): very different price expectations and trust patterns. Local presence and local references matter more here.
Regional segmentation is justified when local presence is the core sale. For purely online B2B, a unified Italian site often works fine.
