Three ways to fail at German SEO
Recurring errors on the German sites I audit:
Treating DACH as one market
Germany, Austria and Switzerland share a language with significant variations (vocabulary, pricing expectations, regulatory frameworks). “Steuerberater” works across all three but tax law differs. “Kassa” in Austria vs “Kasse” in Germany. Prices in CHF for Switzerland, EUR for the other two. Hreflang de-DE, de-AT and de-CH should be distinct for serious DACH targeting.
Translating word-for-word from English
German has compound words (“Maschinenbauingenieur”), formal register expectations (Sie vs du) and very specific industry jargon. A site translated from English by an external service that does not master the sector ends up with copy that natives find awkward. The trust erodes immediately. Search keywords are also fundamentally different: Germans search in compound nouns Google now decomposes contextually but where exact match still helps.
Ignoring trust signals expected by German users
Full Impressum required by law in Germany (with USt-IdNr, register entry, managing director). GDPR-strict cookie consent (no soft opt-in like in some EU countries). Trusted Shops badge for ecommerce. Telephone with German country code prominently displayed. Absence of any of these immediately signals “foreign site” and erodes the trust that drives conversion.

Why not hire a German SEO agency directly?
You can, and for engagements above 10,000 € per month that is often justified. German agency rates are typically 1.3 to 1.8x my hybrid model. How do you guarantee German content quality without writing it yourself?

How do you handle Impressum and GDPR compliance?
