Spanish link building works on relationships
You have links to your Spanish site live in the reports, and the next step is rankings in Spain that move with them. The links that do it are the ones Spanish editors chose to give, and Google counts those.
We have run SEO from Valencia since 2016, including campaigns for a Valencia law firm, a Dominican real estate group selling holiday homes to Spanish retirees, and our own translation agency across .es, .fr, .be, .nl and .com properties. What we see month after month: pitches written in Spanish get answered by Spanish editors, personal proposals reach the inbox, and editorial placements keep their value long after bulk-bought links on PBN-flavoured .es domains have been discounted by Google.
Good Spanish SEO treats link building as slow-burn PR. Below: where authority sits in Spain, the tactics we rely on, the habits worth checking for, and realistic timing.
The Spanish link economy in 2026
Knowing where authority sits tells you where to spend. Spain has just over two million registered .es domains, but editorial authority is concentrated in a small group of national and regional publishers.
Registered domains: 2,134,104 (31 July 2025).

Earn a mention in La Vanguardia, El País, ABC, El Confidencial, El Español or 20minutos, and months of generic guest posting look small by comparison. The audience behind those publishers is almost entirely online.
96.3% of people aged 16 to 74 used the Internet in the last three months, with the Community of Madrid (98.0%), Catalonia (97.8%) and the Balearic Islands (97.3%) leading the autonomous communities.

The regional spread deserves a place in every off-page plan. A backlink from a regional publisher in Valencia or Bilbao is a different asset from one from a Madrid outlet, even at a similar Domain Rating, and local relevance still beats raw DR for queries like abogado herencia Valencia or agencia inmobiliaria Costa Blanca.

The four tactics we keep going back to
Each earns links a Spanish editor chose to give, the kind that keeps its value.
Spanish digital PR. Pitch in Spanish, in the journalist's tone, with a story that fits their beat: Marketing4eCommerce, El Referente, Vozpópuli, El Español, Cinco Días for fintech, regional press for local angles. Lead times are long and reply rates usually sit below 5%, and the placements you earn are excellent.
Niche edits in sector publishers. Spanish industry blogs covering legal, real estate, logistics, translation and e-commerce accept contextual links when the proposal genuinely helps their readers. We work mostly with editors we have known for years, and a new relationship starts with a useful comment on their existing content, well before any pitch.
Cámara de Comercio and association listings. Slow, evergreen, unglamorous. Each provincial Cámara runs its own member directory, and sector associations (AECOC for retail, ANETI for the language industry) still pass equity. They reward patient admin work more than outreach skill, which keeps them underused.
Sponsorships and event listings. Backing or attending a sector fair (DES in Málaga, eShow, FITUR for tourism, SIL Barcelona for logistics) earns a mention on the event site, often regional press coverage, sometimes a podcast or interview. Real activity feeds genuine link signals.
| Tactic | Effort | Typical DR range | What you actually get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spanish digital PR | High | 70 to 90 | Editorial mentions, brand authority |
| Niche edits in sector blogs | Medium | 40 to 65 | Topical relevance, anchor control |
| Cámara and association listings | Low to medium | 50 to 70 | Local trust signals, evergreen |
| Sponsorships and events | Medium | 50 to 80 | Press mentions plus brand exposure |
Three habits to check in any Spanish link plan
Checking for these three keeps your budget on links that count, and we look for them in every Spanish off-page programme we audit.
Check what sits behind cheap marketplace inventory. Publisuites and Prensalink list legitimate publishers, and the cheap end (under EUR 40) is mostly low-traffic blogs with thin editorial control, a footprint Google has had years to learn.
Pitch Spanish editors in Spanish. We ran the test once with a US client who wanted English pitches: 80 personalised English pitches over two months, a 1.25% reply rate. We re-ran the same list in Spanish through a junior linguist on our team and got 11%. Same publishers, same angle, same week of the year.
Plan anchors the way Spanish editors write them. Editors rewrite exact-match anchors: one like abogado matrimonialista Madrid tends to become este despacho or the brand name, so build the plan around that.
Plan for four to eight weeks per link
Knowing the real timeline lets you plan with confidence. From first contact to a live editorial link in Spain, expect four to eight weeks for genuine placements. It runs faster where the relationship already exists, and slower when August or late December fall in the window: Spain takes a proper break twice a year, so plan around both.
Measure any offer, including those on link buying platforms, against that pace: 20 .es links in 30 days means inventory already bought, already on a PBN and already discounted by Google.

Where links fit in a wider Spanish SEO programme
Links multiply what your pages are already worth, so strong pages come first. Off-page work in Spain pulls hardest beside proper Spanish keyword localization, content tuned for Spanish users and a clear Spanish SEO market plan that respects regional differences.
A link from El Español pays off on a strong landing page with sound Spanish on-page SEO, and a well-translated page climbs once referring domains point to it. The two halves work together.
